The 2020 Iowa Brown & Black
Democratic Presidential Forum
-
VICE News hosted and produced the Brown & Black Presidential Forum, the nation’s oldest and only nonpartisan presidential forum dedicated exclusively to addressing issues facing communities of color. The “Brown & Black Presidential Forum” continues VICE News’ goal of visually differentiating itself from cable news, sticking with solid color blocks instead of the more common gradient styles.

The special’s brown and burnt orange color scheme, a rarely seen look in cable news, gives the forum an added layer of specificity that recalls the wooden pulpits of this nation’s legal institutions. The cutout animations of each candidate is a clever way to build on the aesthetic. It helps to differentiate between the unusually high number of candidates by featuring the breadth of their personalities. The movements explicitly refer to their signature mannerism, from Bernie Sanders’ punctuating index finger to Andrew Yang’s enthusiastic thumb. The show was essentially a long conversation and emphasizing those small details draws to focus the unique ways the candidates express their ideas.
